One in three Amsterdammers support raising parking fees, whereas 44% support banning polluting cars from the city. Opposition to environmental measures is strongest among residents who live outside the ring road.
There is rather strong support for these measures among the followers of coalition parties PvdA and GroenLinks. This was revealed by a survey commissioned by the VVD, a party which has launched an intense pro-car campaign.
Car owners and VVD-supporters are overrepresented among the respondents, but according to research institute O+S this is compensated by the fact that respondents are relatively pro-environment.
Today, GroenLinks Amsterdam presented an open letter to MPs in support of the city’s proposed anti-pollution plans. The letter was signed by celebrities including TV presenter Yvon Jaspers, writer Mohammed Benzakour, radio presenter Michiel Veenstra, loony activist Gretta Duisenberg, TV presenter Tarik Yousif, politician Lousewies van der Laan, pop music expert Leo Blokhuis, and actress / singer Ricky Koole.
